Saturday 5th July 2008 - Jolly RSS

RSS Added

Just like buses we're back with another blog. Project Jollyfollies is once again the main focus for our lives after a little bit of time off. Ollie is busy working on new bits and pieces for the website, or at least that is what he says he is doing. Whilst Jenny has been busy working on Dino, more of that later. The more observant of you will notice a small addition on the left hand side column. Yes that's right, we have now added an RSS feed to our website. We are not sure if there is necessarily a need for this, but since leaving e-blogger we have 'lost' this functionality. And it's given Ollie and excuse not to go out cycling. So if you already use RSS or would like to get involved with this technology then we are now RSS friendly. For those of you who don't already use Google Reader, this is what we are using to subscribe to published RSS feeds. It's quite good for hiding your blog reading whilst at work :)

Because our RSS feed is new today apparently it takes about 24 hours before the readers automatically forward the feed provided, so don't worry if it takes a day or so to update. Obviously we don't expect to ever feed that regularly anyhow.

Car Bootie

Dino Selling his WaresOn Saturday we took Dino down to our local car boot sale, filled with the combined junk of our lives. There is a beautiful, liberating feeling to put your possessions into piles, ready to sell for next to nothing. The amount of tat that we have accumulated probably says quite a lot about the pointlessness of the desire to consume in this day and age. We buy, buy, buy - only to put it all away into cupboards not to use. If the only thing we gain whilst on our Folly is ridding ourselves of our greed, then it will have all been worth it! Oh, and with the cash made we can buy more stuff!
Although the boot sale was small, it was the perfect place for us to make our debut. Whilst Jenny was busy at work selling second hand, dirty golf gloves at 50p each, Ollie counted up only 22 other cars. Dino was the second biggest there, only beaten by a large van that seemed to belong to the one of the professional car booters. All in all we made £40 pounds profit whilst there, but the key point was we met a CD collector there, who was desperate to find hidden punk CD collections. Who would have thought it eh? So he came back to ours and was soon delirious with joy at the site of Ollie's dirty, badly cared for, punk collection. Really (pravda!). So after an hour of CD stroking and putting into piles he left with over a 100 CDs and we had another £60 in our tin. Almost enough for a new roof rack. More of that below ......

Roof Rack Patched Up

Lee fixing the rook rackDino's roof rack is a hotch potch of various repair jobs and welds and unfortunately one of the struts had snapped off recently (probably caused by Ollie disco dancing on the roof!). After a lot of humming, hawing and sucking through teeth, Jenny and her brother Lee decided to do another temporary patch whilst we decide whether to replace the whole rack. Quite fittingly, it was the "landrover tool" (aka wheel brace) that came into its own to lever the strut back up into its correct position, and then Lee got out the big boys toys to create fire and fix car! We are still debating whether to keep patching up this rack or buy/make a new one and will debate this further with fellow overlanders round the camp fire at Billing, which is in two weeks... watch this space to find out the decision!

Getting Down with the Kids

For the 3rd and final time Ollie has changed the software used to create our web albums and we are now using Picasa, Google's excellent photo software. Ollie is also toying with Facebook, thinking that it might be a good way to keep in touch whilst away. If someone can explain exactly what you do with Facebook Ollie would certainly like to know!
