Wednesday 2nd November 2006 - Running Repairs

  Tent repairs
Repairs I

After our Ireland test we discovered that our rooftent leaked under pressure from heavy rain and high winds. This was caused by the flysheet being blown onto the canvas and wicking the rain water onto the canvas, and this water eventually flowing into the main chamber.
And although Ollie is perfectly happy in such conditions, Princess Jennifer decided that something had to be done. Luckily during her debutante years she learnt many skills, including how to fix a rooftent with some glue, a pair of jeans and a slightly addled mind! Ollie provided the latter.

The fix was to add two more support rods for the flysheet, to keep it separated from the canvas. The rods we attached to the main sheet with pockets made out of old denim jeans attached with Ambroid liquid cement. This is a handy addition to any rooftent repair kit which we first used to fix the canvas canoe that some clut put their foot through (only difference was at least he wasn't reciting the Russia alphabet at the time) .

On the second picture you can see one of the horizontal bars that we have positioned. These two bars mimic what the central bar does.

We have string running between all 3 bars which also helps to keep the fly sheet away for the canvas. The hardest part of the job was getting the pockets stuck in the correct position, after that it was fairly simple.

We have yet to test this out in extreme weather, but it certainly helps. Once it it tested we will go about making the changes a little more permanent.

Puncture Repairs Repairs II

The second repairs we have been making is a bit more straight forward. The PVC that covers our rooftent has recently been found to be fairly threadbare.

In fact we can see where plenty of repairs have already been made. We first noticed it when we set up the tent and it would be wet. We did not understand why, when we put the tent down dry, it was often damp when we put it up. Eventually we twigged on that it was leaking, and careful examination later revealed the true extent to our problem.

There may well be a better solution, but for the short term we have spent a few hours plugging the holes with various puncture repair kits. This is definitely helping, but I think before we leave we will want to have a better solution in hand.

Running

Ollie has now decided a safer way to teach himself Russian is too learn it whilst he does his training runs. He is now up to 12 miles, and so has plenty of time to listen to the 40 hours of lessons that he has downloaded. The alphabet is now cracked and he is moving forward learning how to deny he speaks English. This is definitely going to help.

Website

For those of you wondering, not much has been changed recently on the main website. Hopefully over Christmas I will have time to add some more colour and gloss, but until then it is just a few small changes. Also please note we are having a few difficulties with eBlogger at the moment, so if you notice any strange blogs, with perhaps pictures missing, this is something we are trying to figure out.

Thanks all for listening - only 3 hours til the Ashes start!
